Intermittent Fasting with Keto Diet explained

Intermittent Fasting with Keto Diet explained by Dr. Boz

Intermittent Fasting with Ketogenic Diet: NOT A LOW-CALORIE DIET. Please, do not confuse my support of intermittent fasting with support for starving. Let me be clear: NO STARVING ALLOWED! Reduced calorie diets are a no-no. Intermittent Fasting (IF) knocks the socks off of a Low Calorie or Reduced Calorie diet. Indeed, I would say they are the OPPOSITE of each other. Intermittent fasting shifts your chemistry in the opposite direction of the low-calorie diets.

A calorie-reduced diet would be more accurately called a torture diet. No matter its name, it triggers your chemistry to store fat. This low-calorie setting takes your food and squirrels it away into cells designated to save energy. If you want body chemistry that locks your energy efficiently into your fat cells, go on a reduced calorie diet. Every study regarding reduced calorie diets has proven this over and over again. Notice that I have not mentioned carbohydrates or fat. When scouring through every reduced calorie diet, notice that the instructors of these diets select food with the fewest calories. Fats add the most calories per bite, therefore are chosen sparingly for these diets. When the dietician adds fat to the list of foods, suddenly their low-calorie diet is no longer low in calories. Their system is stressed, and you can measure their stress hormones to prove it. They don’t sleep well. They feel tired, crabby, and a countdown to the day they can start eating again. Sadly, their metabolism suffered the most damage. During the eight weeks of their diet ordeal, their body remains in the 'store all that you can find' mode. When they resume eating, watch out. BOOOM! The calories will be sucked into storage never to be re-released.

Scheduled Eating - Not Starving
Intermittent Fasting

Autophagy Fasting: The Mystery Explained

00:04

hi I'm dr. Boz and today we're gonna

00:08

take on a hearty topic called

00:10

intermittent fasting if you've watched

00:12

any of the other videos on ketosis this

00:15

one might be the most difficult to

00:17

understand intermittent fasting is

00:19

something that has been much more

00:21

commonly talked about over the last

00:23

couple of years and in part I think it

00:26

is because of the ketogenic diet and how

00:29

much they have similar chemistry states

00:32

when I mentioned the word intermittent

00:34

fasting if you're like my parents or

00:36

many of my patients the only word that

00:38

really registers in their minds is

00:40

fasting and they turn that word into

00:43

starving intermittent fasting is not

00:45

starving in fact I would contend that

00:48

starvation and intermittent fasting

00:50

might be opposite ends of the chemistry

00:54

spectrum there is no starving allowed in

00:56

what I recommend for a ketogenic diet

00:58

and the intermittent fasting that goes

01:00

with it let's be very clear about what

01:02

I'm comparing I am comparing low-calorie

01:04

diets to a intermittent fasting diet

01:08

low-calorie diets are those diets that

01:10

have restrictions of the calories to

01:14

less than 800 calories some of them I've

01:17

seen as low as 600 calories for the

01:19

first two weeks you will ask the

01:20

patients how they feel on those

01:22

low-calorie diets and they use the word

01:24

I feel like I'm starving I feel hungry

01:27

all the time and this chemistry state is

01:30

opposite from what you hear when

01:32

patients are on an intermittent fasting

01:34

state and if you do get the chance to

01:37

interview somebody in the second or

01:40

third day of an intermittent fast they

01:42

won't complain about hunger I mean

01:44

hunger isn't what their most common

01:46

symptom is and I would contend it's

01:48

because of the chemistry going on inside

01:50

their bodies when you compare a low

01:53

calorie diet to intermittent fasting

01:55

let's look at a couple of examples of

01:57

what happens to patients on a

01:59

low-calorie diet they go on to this low

02:01

calorie diet and indeed they do lose

02:03

weight but what's happening deep inside

02:05

their metabolism is that their body is

02:08

registering these few trickling calories

02:11

coming in

02:12

and how valuable it is to prepare for

02:15

what must be a famine ahead

02:18

you see when our body senses that there

02:20

is a low amount of food as opposed to no

02:23

food it results in a different response

02:26

from the system a trickle effect of low

02:29

calories turns into a message where your

02:31

body says we can sense it there's a

02:34

famine coming up you need to take those

02:36

calories store them quickly and don't

02:40

use any extra energy that in essence

02:42

turns down the metabolism of our bodies

02:45

our system gets prepared for the no

02:48

calorie phase the key is that the body

02:50

is always preparing for that low calorie

02:53

phase but it never actually gets there

02:55

the system stores energy and turns down

02:59

the metabolism for a low calorie diet

03:01

when looking at the metabolism of

03:03

somebody who's been on a low-calorie

03:04

diet for I've had patients for a couple

03:07

of years on a low calorie diet and their

03:09

system is running on effectively like

03:12

800 calories a day their body gets less

03:16

efficient every day that they trickle

03:18

calories into their system they may

03:20

survive on 800 calories today and if

03:24

they stick to that inherent calorie diet

03:26

the rules for tomorrow are you now need

03:28

to live on 799 calories and every day

03:32

that they go on with a low calorie diet

03:34

their body gets more and more nervous

03:37

about the impending famine that never

03:40

arrives

03:41

so let's compare that to a fasting state

03:44

when the noise from calories completely

03:47

turns off and I mean it's off not 300

03:51

calories it's zero no calories in a day

03:54

an impressive amount of changes happen

03:57

within the first 24 36 and especially

04:00

within the first 72 hours of no calories

04:02

first off your body uses up the storage

04:05

sugar that's in your liver and the sugar

04:08

that's in your blood the next thing that

04:09

happens is your insulin begins to fall

04:11

and even in my patients with insulin

04:14

resistance no calories turns into a

04:17

plummet of their insulin by 72 hours

04:20

insulin you might remember is that

04:22

hormone that stores fat so now that the

04:25

insulin is gone all of the storage tanks

04:27

within their body open up and fat gets

04:31

released to the circulation once that

04:33

fat is in circulation it turns on those

04:36

little mitochondria furnaces inside your

04:39

cells and your body begins to burn a

04:41

fuel that has energy beyond measure

04:44

every day is if they go without eating

04:46

and I mean zero eating the metabolism

04:49

within their body gets a little higher

04:51

and a little higher and a little higher

04:52

it seems counterintuitive when you say a

04:55

patient is fasting they have zero

04:57

calories and yet their metabolism is

05:00

growing but think for a minute about

05:01

evolution if you had run out of food and

05:04

your tribe was now in danger of

05:07

starvation and you needed to be the

05:09

person who goes and catches the food for

05:12

the tribe to eat it would not make sense

05:14

that your metabolism would shut down

05:15

your system needs that backup energy to

05:18

be able to sprint and go find and forage

05:21

for food there is a mechanism built into

05:24

our systems that when food is zero

05:27

metabolism Rises this seems

05:29

counterintuitive the first time I

05:30

explained it to patients I have a chart

05:32

of a patient who lost 50 pounds take a

05:35

look at what her calories consumed were

05:38

at the beginning of when we started our

05:41

relationship she was burning 800

05:43

calories a day and she'd been on this

05:45

low-calorie diet for at least six years

05:47

there were times she'd fall off and

05:49

every time she fell off the low calorie

05:52

diet she'd gain back not just the weight

05:54

she'd lost in the low calories but even

05:56

more as you examined her you saw very

05:58

dull skin her hair had fallen out her

06:02

mind was slow and even on our first

06:05

visit her speech was slurred these are

06:07

all signs of a chronically inflamed

06:10

malnourished system specifically her

06:13

brain when we went through the shock and

06:16

awe of eating 80% fat at first she

06:18

didn't believe it but her many years of

06:21

a low-calorie diet had clearly not

06:23

worked

06:24

she began eating what I told her to eat

06:26

and this high-fat low-carbohydrate diet

06:29

sparked some amazing changes in her for

06:32

starters she had a whole bunch of

06:34

inflammation stored up within her body

06:35

so she lost nearly 20 pounds in

06:38

first week and a half and this was

06:39

mostly water we've explained that in

06:41

other posts and that's expected but what

06:43

happens next is when she comes in for

06:46

week three

06:47

she beams with energy and I could tell

06:50

by the moment she walked in that her

06:52

metabolism was higher her speech was

06:54

clear she didn't slough her her feet

06:57

along the floor as she walked she

07:00

bounded into the clinic and had a

07:02

incredible story of renewed energy

07:05

improved mental focus and a spirit that

07:09

she thought was long gone in her life

07:11

she went on to lose 70 pounds that year

07:13

just using a ketogenic diet we only get

07:16

to find what metabolism stimulation

07:19

happens in her in a minute intermittent

07:21

fasting when she hit a plateau and the

07:23

plateau came mostly because she had

07:25

increased the carbs enough to turn back

07:28

on the insulin and after years of having

07:30

such a low metabolism her body was a

07:33

little skeptical to believe that this

07:35

high fat time was going to continue it

07:37

didn't take more than 30 carbohydrates a

07:40

day for her to start plateauing and not

07:43

being able to lose weight as she

07:45

returned to the clinic we were able to

07:46

start intermittent fasting and the first

07:50

fasting she made was for 36 hours

07:52

it was difficult she did find that some

07:56

of the tricks of the trade that I

07:57

encourage patients are to put Himalayan

07:59

salt crystals in your pocket and when

08:02

you watch what happens to hunger when

08:05

fasting is hunger comes in waves

08:08

unlike the hunger that you get which is

08:10

chronic and all the time in a low

08:12

calorie diet when you fast the waves of

08:16

hunger only happen for certain sections

08:19

of the day if you can be prepared that

08:20

during those sections you flood your

08:23

system with salt by putting one of those

08:25

crystals in your mouth it is a success

08:28

story again and again with my patients

08:30

she was able to do that she made it 36

08:32

hours and when she went to have

08:34

breakfast after 36 hours of fasting she

08:37

ate a high fat diet her favorite was

08:39

eggs mixed with Moo flour which is

08:43

olives in oil this combination has been

08:46

a stable for many of my patients it's

08:48

not too high in fat it's just enough

08:51

food that gets them

08:52

back to feeling like they're on the

08:54

eating schedule again as opposed to what

08:55

I did the first time when I fasted which

08:57

I felt like I deserved this really big

08:59

meal I in fact ate way too many carbs

09:02

and got kind of sick from it all I've

09:05

learned from not just my mistakes but

09:07

again what the literature says which is

09:08

eating one rather small meal in foods

09:12

that you like and also not too

09:15

overwhelming in volume when you come off

09:17

of your fast the punchline for this post

09:19

was that when patients hear about

09:22

intermittent fasting they instantly hear

09:24

the word starvation that sense of

09:26

constant hunger comes when your body has

09:29

a trickle of calories that go in and

09:31

this is what I find in patients who've

09:33

been on a low-calorie diet for years

09:34

instead intermittent fasting happens

09:37

where there is zero calories and when

09:40

they do eat they eat a low carbohydrate

09:43

high fat diet to continue that ketosis

09:47

type chemistry which keeps the

09:50

inflammation low continues to stimulate

09:52

the metabolism within their body and not

09:55

end up with a chronic starvation mode

09:57

found in a low calorie diet if you want

09:59

to learn more about this diet take a

10:01

look at the book I wrote anyway you can

10:03

but also tune into here and send me

10:05

questions below I'd be happy to try and
10:06
answer them
